Valparaíso is one of Chile’s major port cities and in the words of poet Pablo Neruda, “The jewel of the pacific.” Located in Central Chile, 74 miles northwest of the capital Santiago, the city is an important educational center with nine universities. Major industries include tourism, culture and shipping. About 50 international cruise ships visit the port every year during the short Chilean summer. The port is also host to container freight and exports many products including wine, copper and fresh fruit.
