Punta del Este is a resort town on a peninsula near the southern tip of Uruguay. During the summer months, the population jumps from 10,000 to nearly one million as tourists flock to the scenic beaches. The beaches have dramatically different wave patterns depending on the location. Some have very calm waters while the waves are very strong on others. In 1982, a sculpture named Monumento al Ahogado (monument to the drowned), was completed which marks the wave transition along one beach to warn swimmers of the rough waves. Since its completion, it has become a landmark for Punte del Este.
