June 23, 2009 – Dutch Harbor, Unalaska
by Herb McCormick
Dutch Harbor, Unalaska (June 23):
The 64-foot cutter Ocean Watch motored into the distant port of Dutch Harbor in the wee hours this morning after a successful, if sometimes bumpy, crossing of the Gulf of Alaska. After a brief tour of the inner small-boat harbor-we were, how shall we put it, somewhat disoriented-we tied up among a collection of fishing trawlers in the main harbor, with first mate Dave Logan threading a veritable needle in reverse for a perfect landing.
This morning we were greeted with a box of doughnuts from the port authorities and a copy of the local newspaper, which featured our arrival on the front page. Our port host, Reid Brewer, has been instrumental in organizing a series of events for our stay, starting this evening with a talk by our scientist, Michael Reynolds, on our onboard research program.
Ocean Watch has been given a good scrub and is in fine fettle. The same cannot yet entirely be said of the crew, but it’s good to be ashore.
Our schedule going forward has been somewhat changed, as the work list has grown en route and every sailor knows it’s imprudent to commence a voyage on a Friday. Skipper Mark Schrader has made the call to begin the next leg of our trip, to Nome, sometime early-as in EARLY-Saturday morning.
We’ll return to our regular schedule of daily reports then, with breaking news as it happens. Until then, thanks to everyone for their continued support of our voyage Around the Americas. For the moment, over and out.
