Charleston Background
The port city of Charleston is located roughly half way down the coast of South Carolina where the Ashley River meets the Cooper. Charleston’s port is the second largest container seaport on the East Coast of the United States and the fourth largest in North America. With a total of five terminals and a new one under construction, commerce and tourism are the leading sources of revenue for the city. However, pollutants are a serious issue in Charleston Harbor with a recent study revealing that dolphins and Loggerhead turtles show high levels of contaminants – a clear indication that the environmental health of the coastal region is threatened.
