Puntarenas is the largest city in the Central Pacific region, situated on a long, narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Nicoya. For many years, this port was the country’s principal cargo port but that distinction now goes to the newer port in Caldera. However Puntarenas is still Costa Rico’s most important fishing port and still handles visiting cruise ships.

Scheduled arrival: March 24, 2009
Scheduled departure: March 30, 2009

The Galápagos Islands will forever be associated with Charles Darwin and his renowned book, The Voyage of the Beagle. The islands remain much as they were when Darwin visited although various animals, which were later introduced by man, are threatening some indigenous species. One mystery which puzzled Darwin, the unusually dry and moderate climate, has been solved by science. It is now known that the Peru, or Humboldt Current, carries large volumes of cold water north from the Antarctic region which washes the equatorial coast of South America with cool water.

Puerto Montt is a port city in southern Chile, located at the end of the Pan American highway at northern end of the Reloncaví Sound. It is one of the fastest growing cities in Southern Chile due in large part to the expanding salmon industry. In addition to fishing, the city’s economy also depends on agriculture and forestry.
