Barrow is located on the Chukchi Sea coast and is the northernmost community in the United States. Fishing and whaling are an important part of the local economy. Barrow and the surrounding environment has unique and varied ecosystems that will both impact and influence any changes in global climate, and the growing presence of development activities and environmental contaminants. The surrounding area offers rich opportunities for study of of the arctic environment including; tundra, permafrost, streams, lakes, lagoons, ocean, atmosphere, and wildlife ranging from microbes and invertebrates to fish, waterfowl, lemmings, caribou and whales.
